Form & Content 5

I found this design online when I was looking for graffiti art. I thought it had a good form and content connection and really showed typography working well with image in the same style. It is presented in a collection of a competition for aesthetically pleasing Windows wallpapers. The connection between the content and form is that with the technologies that Windows 7 presents to us, we are able to design wallpaper like this with greater ease than before. What makes this visually interesting is presenting a logo that everyone recognizes in a style that everyone recognizes but combining the two represent the logo in a new and different way, The simplicity of the piece is also a positive quality, the Windows logos are generally pretty simple and get the point across in a few simple steps while still being powerful. The repetition of the graffiti style between the image and type also helps draw it together into one coherent artwork.

The Xbox 360 was released on November 16th, 2005 by Microsoft. This is the logo they have used to promote the console ever since its release. It is the second console released by Microsoft so it has a focus of a modern look to the design, clean lines and shapes, simple yet powerful and universally recognized.

I picked this logo because it is something I see everyday when I turn my Xbox on and enjoy the world of video games. I also picked it because I believe it to be a very successful logo and brand identity, throughout the entire life of the console so far, Microsoft has really played off these colors in their packaging and graphics and animations on the console. The connection between the content and form is that the 360 is the complete entertainment experience, much like the complete sphere used in the logo branded with the green X much like the entertainment is branded with the Xbox’s own flair and originality. What makes the piece visually interesting is how simple it is yet how well it is done. While only using two colors, it is visually captivating and dramatic. It is the image recognized with quality entertainment.

Linkin Park is one of the most widely known and influential bands of the 21st century, and my personal favorite. Not only are they known for their music but for their art as well. The majority of the band members became friends in college where they were pursuing their careers to become graphic designers. A member, Mike Shinoda, who is the chief contributor of the art direction of the band, displayed his public art show “Glorious Excess (BORN)” at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles in 2008.

This image was used on the band’s website for quite some time before they recently updated it, it was one of their newer logos before they changed it for their new album they released 3 years ago. I chose this logo because I think it captures their sound and style the best. The connection between the content and form is that they are a unique band with a unique sound and they aren’t afraid to break the boundaries and go “outside the box”. The sound they were trying to portray with this logo is a serene and calming melodic sound and that is what they accomplished in the song that accompanied this logo on the website. What makes the piece visually interesting are the dramatic and extended N and R letters, the imagery contained within the letters, and the use of lines running throughout the piece.

On April 22, 1999, the United States Postal Service had issued a stamp dedicated to the philosopher and novelist Ayn Rand, the author of Atlas Shrugged, philosophically the most challenging bestseller of its time. Miss Rand's unique philosophy, Objectivism, has gained a worldwide audience.

Nicholas Gaetano is the artist who designed this postage stamp and his art-deco designs have appeared on the covers of recent editions of Ayn Rand’s novels. His stamp artwork shows Rand alongside the Manhattan skyline, which she considered an alluring symbol of human achievement.

She was put on a postage stamp due to her love of collecting them.

I found this piece online at http://www.papertig.com/AR_Stamp_Poster.htm. I love the 1920’s – 30’s art-deco style of art, the hard lines, simple bold colors, great use of contrast, geometric shapes, use of outlines, and as for the content, the fascination with modernity and machinery. The connection between the content and form is that Ayn Rand was one of the greatest and most influential authors during the time that the art-deco style of art was popular. What makes the piece visually interesting are the bold lines on the left and the skyline of the buildings on the right meeting in the middle to where her face is the focal point of the piece. Her name is also in the art-deco style of typography, with bold simple lines, large bowls in the letters R and D and not using a horizontal line to connect the A. This stamp is the perfect example of what Ayn Rand and the art-deco style represented.

This is the logo for “The Point After” which airs every Monday during Browns season at 7 PM, WKYC offers up a unique perspective of Cleveland Browns football. I found this logo online, on WKYC’s website. This is a very modern logo, representing the love that Cleveland has for their football team. I found this logo very interesting because it does have a modern look to it and because it encompasses 3 different things into 1 shape: the “o” in the name. It represents the letter O, it represents a football, and it represents the number 6 (which is how many points are scored by a touchdown before “The Point After” is attempted to tack on that 7th point). I think this was genius on how they incorporated all 3 into 1 simple form. What makes this visually interesting are the color, slick modern look, incorporation of 3 things into 1 shape, simplicity of the logo, and instant recognition of what the logo represents. The logo is balanced and well proportioned right in the center of the screen with a slight tilt to it to add some visual flair. The emphasis is certainly on the O /6/football with it being centered pretty well, being larger in scale than any other letter and having the strong highlight placed on it. The type relates to the image by being the image itself, it works together as a whole, especially with the text surrounding the O /6/football that’s placed in the center of the logo. All in all this logo is very well done and its gets it’s point across with great simplicity and organization.
